Homemade Granola: A Guest Post by Melony Dew

I have a confession to make, I am really bad at planning for breakfast! I leave myself little time in the morning and end up eating a banana or a granola bar as I run out the door. This is not a healthy practice! Today, my lovely auntie, Melony Dew will be sharing one of her favourite breakfast recipes with us. This seems like the type of recipe you could make in advance and have breakfast ready for the week. I can’t wait to try it out.

Easy Homemade Granola: A Guest Post by Melony Dew

I have been asked to share a recipe on Guliash Girl’s food blog. I poured through the many recipes to decide what to share.

This morning my house smelled like heaven as a pan of homemade granola slow baked in the oven. I have been making this for years after tasting some made by my friend’s daughter, Julie. It has passed the test of time, it’s easy to make and budget friendly.

So here it is. I hope you enjoy it as much as we have. Handy small portions have accompanied us while traveling, at sports events for kids quick snacks but I enjoy it best served with vanilla yogurt. The perfect start to a day.

 

Julie’s Granola
2 spoon, under 1 hour

In a large bowl add the following:

-3 cups rolled oats

-2 cups Vector cereal

-1 cup nuts or seeds (Today I used raw almonds, pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds)

-2 cups dried fruit ( my favourite is craisins )

 

Combine these wet ingredients:

-½ cup canola oil

-¼ cup water

-2/3 real maple syrup

-1 teaspoon vanilla

-½ teaspoon salt

Pour the wet ingredients over the dry and mix well. Spread it out in a 9 X13 pan. Bake at 250 degrees for 40 minutes. Stir every ten minutes to avoid lumping.

When cooled store in airtight container. I have frozen this and works well.

There is something so heartwarming about recreating a special dish with the recipe hand written on a tattered card in a loved one’s handwriting. I love Pinterest too, but don’t forget to jot those special dishes down on a good old fashioned recipe card.
